#16. march's second wind with sukanya
read on for stream links, an interview with sukanya, and our annotated tracklists : )

hello friends! i hope this dispatch finds you well < 3 another few weeks have flown by, so much life has happened, and i’m here to share a big ol’ recap on last month’s show! thanks for stickin with me. i’m writing from the daybed in my living room as the sun’s setting on a very chilly spring day, but the trees are in full bloom and so verdant so as the sun shines in, the room has a beautiful green and yellow glow. i love this time of year! no big musings or groundbreaking realizations to reflect on in the substack this month (yet lol). i’ve just been trying to get a handle on life and work on myself. i’m looking forward to a lil break in a few weeks : ) now…. let’s talk about last month’s show!
my hour was “a big grab bag of stuff”, “a nice little collage of songs i’ve been listening to and loving” as i described it on air - real audio diary hours transmitting all the sounds i had been taking in for the first few weeks of the year. the annotated tracklist from me is below for the full breakdown, it all makes sense once you push play : D and then we had a very special guest set from real heart friend SUKANYA on hour 2! she spent it celebrating the greatest hits from her own radio show, Alloy Hour, on 8ball radio. it was so sick, so many of her selections bust my brain but i especially loved this track which blew my mind!! i’m so happy she could join, especially ahead of her beautiful set at brooklyn museum first saturdays, which you can also listen to here. leading up to this episode, we got a chance to kick it and i learned about sukanya’s art practices and interests, which i’m so happy she dove deeper on in her accompanying interview (there are pics!!). thanks so much to my sweet friend for playing on the show and sharing songs of your heart with us < 3 you are the best.
read on for stream links, an interview w/ sukanya, and annotated tracklists from both of us : ) enjoy, and see you back at the lot this weekend for the next episode of second wind. special guest announcement coming tomorrowwwww ……
with so much love and gratitude, always!

march’s second wind ft. special guest sukanya < 3
watch the set here.
listen to it below : )
*lightly edited for clarity : )
1) Sukanya! Tell me about your set! What did you have in mind when you were preparing the tracks you wanted to play? What energy were you trying to capture?
Nazuk! Thank you for having me!! I was hoping to bring out the essence of my radio show. I have a hard time narrowing in on a genre and I feel like my style of djing goes all over the place sometimes and I think that’s what happened this time as well lol. I was going back to some of my old shows and certain tracks were speaking to me again so I brought that to second wind as well :)
2) Can you tell me a bit about the origins of your own radio show Alloy Hour on 8ball? And what’s the story behind the name?
I really wanted to get involved with radio my senior year of college, but it did not really work out because of COVID. Once I moved to New York, I started applying to stations but didn’t really hear back from anyone. 8ball reached out to me a year or two after I applied because they took a break onboarding new shows. The one question I always got while applying was what genre of music will you play and I struggled so much to answer that because I was like anything and everything I wanted to?
An alloy is a mix of elements/metals that are brought together to enhance different properties. I see my show as this mix of sounds and beats that somehow work together to create this beautiful show :)
3) When do you listen to music most? During what activity?
On runs/walks, in my apartment, or my commute. Sometimes I get really into it when I got to do boring desk work and will start dancing a little at my desk.
4) What’s your earliest musical memory? Is there someone/somewhere/something you think of or credit with bringing music into your life?
I think of road trips with my family. We honestly, thinking about it, would go on long car rides a lot throughout my childhood. And it was such a wide range in music because we would all take turns playing albums or songs we wanted to hear or there would be a few we all agreed on that would always get played. My dad introduced me to Pink Floyd and I had a slight obsession with them in middle school, which made me feel slightly out of place at the age of 12.
5) What was the last music experience (song/album, concert, DJ set, etc) that really moved you. Why?
My set at [Brooklyn Museum] first Saturday was really special to me. I felt like I really got out of my head and nerves around it, and had the most fun time ever. I also got to perform with my friend Naima (Nailoh) who is a musician. We blended her music into the set while she sang live. Gorgeous!
6) If you’re getting in the car with someone, what’s one song you’d throw on right now?
At this moment, not a song, but I’d put on some Asha Bhosle. Rest in peace<3
7) What’s your latest interest/obsession, music-related or otherwise?
Frozen yogurt! I kind of forgot it existed and now I’m reminded of how much I love it and am quite obsessed. Embarrassing fact -- I stood in line for 45 minutes to try this spot called Mimi’s and it was delicious.
8) What’s the most recent thing that’s made you feel inspired?
My trip to India :)
9) When we hung out a few days before the show, you told me about your loom and some of your experiments in weaving, and I know you teach art during your day job as well - can you share a bit about your own art practice, and what you’re into making and teaching these days? You can include pics here if you want : )
Yesss, I have a love for textiles and fabric and was experimenting through different practices to make my own. Weaving just clicked for me. It is so so meditative and it felt intuitive in a way for me that other practices did not. I started with a small project of making scarves for family and friends at the end of last year and just made my first pillow (wove the fabric and sewed it together)!! I’m hoping to work on more projects this year and even collab with some of my friends. I visited South India in January and it inspired me so much to keep going and play with new fabrics and techniques.

At my job, I get to teach kids and other educators printmaking. A lot of printing requires having space and larger equipment, but we think of ways for kids to be introduced to different techniques at home or in the classroom. We’re running our first printmaking summer camp this year which I’m soo excited for.

12) Real ones know you’re a baker extraordinaire : ) What’s the last thing you took out of the oven!!
I love my sweet treats, so baking is a must. I made a loaf of carrot bread recently!

one of the most impactful artists to me in this life. i’ve always been in awe of him, and his partner elizabeth who continues to support glenn in creating and sharing his art even after his recent dementia diagnosis. a love so profound and beautiful to witness from afar < 3 i love this song from the recent project laughter in summer, which they made together : )
just climbing - evilgiane
the first few months of this year were really hard for me and this song sounds like hope < 3
***@2:00 - excerpt from interview with ceramicist hitoshi morimoto
it paired perfectly with these words from the ceramicist, who speaks about his experience as an apprentice for a master ceramicist, where he learned so much about life and practice without even being able to touch the clay or glaze. i’m currently doing a work-study at my ceramics studio and can relate to an extent
