21. second wind is back this sunday, august 16
the show returns this wknd, ft another very special guest : )
happy friday second wind family : ) after all my excitement about summer and creativity and doing/making, joke’s on me lol. this summer’s turned out to be a tough one! #life. so very busy and hard, and also giving “what have i even done” vibes? wah! but august is looking up it seems, i’m willing it! posi vibes.
in the absence of energy and time to lean into passions, i turned to watching things when i could. i want to share two docs in particular that brought me some deep inspiration. also i typed more than i thought i was going to LOL sorry.
Toshiko Takaezu: Portrait of an Artist, I learned about the Japanese-American Toshiko Takaezu only this year, when my friend Raja spoke about her on a ceramics podcast, and now I see both her name and her work everywhere. I am so inspired by the quiet enormity of her work, both in terms of the powerful impression a small but gorgeous bowl of hers could leave, and in terms of the sheer scale of her sculptures. Her style really resonated with me, and I feel like it affirmed me as I work to development my own “artistic voice”. I recently took to experimenting with surface decoration and discovered my instinctual approach to and style of glazing is actually abstract, and quite similar in energy. Since I worked on some of my first large-scale sculptural pieces last year, I’ve had the unsatisfied hunger and desire to continue to build bigger as I get older and spend more time in my ceramics practice - this is a feeling/calling that Takaezu felt, too. This doc shows her in her professorship at Princeton, and in her day-to-day studio and home practice. “Goals” feels silly to say in response to the doc, which was somewhat somber and matured in tone lol, but as I watched, it’s the overwhelming feeling I had.
A Man Named Pearl: I met up with my friend annie and a few pals on her roof in the midst of a period of shitty health a few weeks ago, and she mentioned this incredible documentary and that I might like it (she may have actually said “naaaaaaazuk you have to watch it!!!” lol). Like is an understatement. I LOVED it and felt so inspired by Pearl, who I learned passed away just three months ago. The doc is the story of a man who built the beauty and reflection of love he embodied and wanted to see in the world through a defiant, magnificent, mind-bending topiary garden in Bishopville, South Carolina. A self-taught artist, he was brimming with positivity, absolutely hell-bent on making his art no matter the hour or circumstance presented, every cell in his body constantly propelling him to grab a chainsaw, sculpt greenery that by all accounts should not have been thriving in his yard, and share the joy of his masterfully crafted garden with locals and visitors from around the world alike. And he never stopped being the kindest and most generous person in town. He also started his practice in his 40s - a reminder that it’s never too late to discover what you’re passionate about and develop a practice, if you really want to.
NOWWWWW, i head out to camp this wknd before the show on sunday! i’m so hype for some beautiful time in nature and to bring mounty along for the ride. i’m also soooooooo hype to announce this weekend’s special guest……
